I’m in Munich for holiday during the next three days, returning on Sunday.

I won’t be able to blog during that period, and presumably won’t have net access either.

26jul2004 · ALSA

Finally, I managed to install ALSA, the “new” sound system for Linux.

I think I never had these damn problems. First, ALSA needs some packages (of course, they are missing on my box, or even worse, they are outdated.)

After installing, I got some weird Out of Memory: killing ... messages. Yeah, that was fun… It turned out there was circular reference in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base. “Hey, can happen, ”I think and uncomment it. Reboot… Wait 2 minutes… Out of Memory. Ctrl-c. Everything ALSA works, though.

After 20 minutes I found out that you have to call update-modules to let changes in /etc/modprobe.d propagate to /etc/modules. Nice. ALSA works now.

Not quite, it turns out the debianic timidity is rather old, it just quits instead of providing a virtual MIDI output. (By the way, why don’t these fucking sound cards don’t have any synthesizers on board anymore?)

Finally, pd works! Somehow it never did with OSS…

Yeah, I redesigned by blog. This time, I wanted something modern… :-)

25jul2004 · DragonFlyBSD on qemu

I recently installed DragonFlyBSD in qemu, and so far, it’s really nice to use.

Net-access is a bit difficult in qemu, so I just grab FreeBSD packages via scp from my box. Oh well.

qemu got really improved from 0.5.5 to 0.6.0, it now boots DragonFlyBSD and Plan9 out of the box. (Both of them didn’t work for me in older versions, YMMV). By the way, if you want to compile qemu, be sure to use GCC 3.3, all others will fail miserably at one or another file. :

23jul2004 · Two simple Arch tools

I wrote two simple, but very useful scripts for Arch.

The first, mkrelease makes it simple to create releases off an Arch archive, but re-get-ing the source and running a hook. It creates .tar.gz archives for now.

To use it, you’ll need a file =mkrelease in {arch} or the current dir, which will be read by the shell. At least, define version here, which returns the version used in the archive name. For example:

function version {
  ruby -r rlml -e 'puts RLML::VERSION'
}

Optionally, you also may define a posthook, to change files, generate documentation, etc.

After configuring and running mkrelease, you get a nice tarball in your working directory, or the +releases directory, if present.

The second script it likely to create some anger among fellow Arch users, because it’s a implementation of a controversial issue: expanding CVS-like keywords. tla-keywords is a Ruby script to do exactly this job.

It implements most of the useful CVS tags, such as $Author$, $Date$, $Id$, $Header$, $Revision$ and $Source$. There are some Arch specifc keywords too, such as $Arch-Full-Id$.

As a simple example, it converts: FULLVERSION = “$Id$” to : FULLVERSION = “$Id: rlml.rb 0.9 2004/07/23 11:44:12 chneukirchen devo $”

It’s not made to be used for ordinary source files, but when the source leaves the Arch world, for example, after a release. (It works nicely with above mkrelease).

It modifies files in-place, and provides a special keyword to allow meaningful defaults, for example (this is one line):

FULLVERSION = `tla logs -f | tail -1`  # $Arch-Replace: \
              `tla logs -f | tail -1` -> $Arch-Revision$ $

will get replaced with $Arch-Revision$ (which has already been expanded).

Happy hacking!

Feedback willkommen!

18jul2004 · Summer Day

17jul2004 · Flexibility of Nukumi

As I’ve found out, Nukumi can be adapted to a lot of situations, but certain things just aren’t possible without hacking the source files directly. I was hoping to find a workaround, as it is likely to make updates more difficult.

I wondered making a tool to apply WEB-like change files (diffs, more or less) to the source, but found it too difficult to integrate to the distribution.

I got reminded of the Jerry Sussman quote (taken from the ILC 2002 proceedings):

Computer science is in deep trouble. Structured design is a failure. Systems as currently engineered are brittle and fragile. They cannot be easily adapted to new situations. Small changes in requirements entail large changes in structure and configuration. […]

This problem is structural, this is not a complexity problem. It will not be solved by some form of modularity. We need new ideas, we need a new set of engineering principles implying effectively built, flexible, robust, evolvable, efficient systems.

BTW, fortune can be pretty funny sometimes:

Charlie was a chemist,
But Charlie is no more.
For what he thought was H2O,
Was H2SO4.

I don’t do anything interesting right now. Expect my blogging frequency to lower.

15jul2004 · The most awful Perl script

I’ve seen the most awful Perl script ever. I guess it’s the first Perl the author ever wrote. It’s purpose is to provide a server that returns Lotto numbers.

I don’t really want to reproduce it as a whole, but only the “greatest” lines of code.

It starts by neither using use warnings; nor use strict;. Please do that all the time.

For example:

foreach $nologing (@lottotip)
{
print "$nologing ";
}
print "\n";

Well, why easy if you can have it complicated? I guess most people would prefer:

print "@lottotip\n";

Another cool thing are the variable names, for example:

$sollichabbrechen="wahr";

This would translate to:

$shalliexit="true";

The main thing is the Lotto number generation function:

sub tip
{
   # Unterprogramm welches Lottotip erzeugt.
   # Gibt ein Array namens "lottotip" zurück.

“It returns an array called `lottotip’”. Wow. I didn’t know Perl had named arrays. ;-) :

   # Aufruf des Unterprogrammes erfolgt mit "&tip"

“You call this subroutine by `&tip’”. I guess the casual Perl programmer knows that. The “&” is optional in modern Perl, BTW. :

   srand; # Zufallsgenerator starten

You shouldn’t srand inside a subroutine, do it once in the main program. :

   @lottotip=(0,0,0,0,0,0);

   for($lottoschleife=0;$lottoschleife<6;$lottoschleife++)
    {
lottozufallwieder:
     # Zufallszahl erzeugen
     $lottozufall=int(rand(46));

     # Schauen ob zwischen 0 und 46
     if($lottozufall == 0 || $lottozufall > 45)
        {
        goto lottozufallwieder;
        }

$lottozufall=int(rand(45)+1); would have been easier. goto, yuck! (next exists, by the way.) :

     # Schauen das keine Lottozahlen im Tip doppelt vorkommen
     $lottoarraycheck=0;
     while($lottoarraycheck < 6)
        {
        if($lottozufall == $lottotip[$lottoarraycheck])
        {
        goto lottozufallwieder;
        }

You know goto is evil? :

        $lottoarraycheck++;
        }

     $lottotip[$lottoschleife]=$lottozufall;
    }
    return @lottotip;
   # Subfine
}

That was an awful way to write:

sub tip {
  return(sort { rand() <=> rand() } (1..45))[1..6];
}

Some code just shouldn’t be published…
and some people can write Basic in all languages. ;-)
